Review: Show Your Bones — Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Show Your Bones

Karen O sings more and shouts less, they’ve slowed it down a tiny little bit, they sound like they threw away half their songs and worked a bit harder on the better ones that were left, and no two songs sound so alike that you wonder why they both exist. I like this better than their last one.

Still nothing to match Maps but I really like Cheated Hearts.

Review: Sound On Sound — Saturday Looks Good To Me.

Sound On Sound

I love Saturday Looks Good To Me, but I’d previously only heard their full–length albums, so this collection of 30 (count ‘em!) assorted b–sides, alternative versions and rarities is pretty sweet. Some tracks are the familiar SLGTM sound, others interestingly work in progress versions of album tracks. And a couple are polished, glitchy electropop like Nervous, which isn’t much like anything on their albums but brilliant nonetheless.

Also brilliant are Redder Records, who not only got this across the Atlantic faster than anything I’ve ever ordered from the US, but also included a bonus compilation disc of their other artists and a little handwritten thank–you note. I like service like that.

Review: be your own PET — be your own PET.

be your own PET

If the lead singer sang more and shouted less, and if they’d all just slow down a tiny little bit, and if they threw away half their songs and worked a bit harder on the better ones that were left, and if it wasn’t so easy to miss one song turning into another because they all sound so samey, I might (might) like be your own PET.

As it is, I quite like most of the one about the Adventure.

Review: Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me — The Pipettes.

The Pipettes

Brilliant, obviously. The B–sides seem to be listed incorrectly everywhere though, including the inlay. Tsk. The track–listing is:

  1. Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me
  2. Judy
  3. Dirty Mind (Acoustic Version)

Review: Damn Damn Leash, Extra Extra and Fire Department — be your own PET.

Damn Damn Leash

This band make me feel old and tired. I’m literally exhausted listening to them. I guess there’s enough of a Yeah Yeah Yeahs feel to explain why they were recommended to me, but I’m pretty sure I’d have to be about 16 years old to really enjoy them. I just felt the need for something a bit more relaxing, like The Go! Team or being chased through the woods in the dark by a pack of rabid dogs.

Also, get the hell off my damn lawn.
